We’re a little blue in our house this week. Our daughter got wait-listed on her top choice of colleges. It’s not a good place to be as it forces you to potentially make a U-turn in August, after you've already got your mind set on your second choice school, and most likely have already made contact with your roommate and chosen your classes. Plus, the #1 school immediately loses a bit of its luster when they've told you you’re not their #1 choice.
We've already let her know that her number 2 college is out of the running. It’s overseas and just not realistic, financially speaking. I will buy an extra lottery ticket or two in the coming weeks as I would sure love to be able to send her where she wants to go.
We’re blue because it looks as though she will be attending school 8 hours away. She’s our only child, so the empty nest is really going to hurt. The thought of having her so far away hurts even more.
This is the biggest decision she’ll ever have made in her young life. I try to tell her that it’s not a life sentence. If she’s not happy, she can always transfer. But I know she would have preferred for the right choice to have been a little clearer.
