Our hot water heater has been out of commission all week. The first day, I came to work without a shower. I used dry shampoo and a lot of perfume and I felt like crap all day. That evening, a good friend offered her basement shower and I happily took her up on it. I drove over to her house at 6am in my bathrobe and slippers and entered the house through her garage, which she had kindly opened for me. She even put on the bathroom light so I wouldn’t have to stumble through the house to find it. I came out, in my bathrobe and slippers, feeling like a million bucks and prayed I wouldn’t be pulled over on the short drive home.
We still had no resolution to the hot water situation by last night, so Sarah very kindly offered her shower to me again. This time, however, not wanting another early alarm, she provided me with the garage door code and I had to find my own way to the bathroom. But oh how I am learning to appreciate a hot shower! I finished up, dried off, and put my robe and slippers back on for the ride home. As I was about to turn the bathroom door handle, I remembered Otto and Ziggy, Sarah’s enormous German shepherds. I wondered if they might be waiting for me, ready to attack when I emerged from the bathroom. I paused a while, ear to the door to see if I could hear them panting or growling. Nothing. I quietly emerged from the bathroom, sprinted to the door and got out safely.
Sarah sent me a message asking if I had even come this morning. She didn’t hear a thing. Neither did her watchdogs, I told her and asked if they shouldn’t get their pay docked this morning.
I am told we have hot water again and I’m thankful for that, but I’m even more thankful for a generous friend and hard of hearing dogs.
