I’m spending the day in the principal’s office. As far as I know, it’s not a disciplinary action. I recently started a new development position at a small school. And when I say small school, I’m not only referring to the student body. We’re a little short on physical space here. I don’t have my own office, so I usually borrow desk space from staff members that are out of the office, frequently getting kicked out for one reason or another. Sometimes I work from home. I keep office supplies in the trunk of my car. My boss has tried to make a space for me where one does not exist. I’ve even joked that the changing table in the large, family bathroom might easily convert to a desk. Last week I got my own shelf and there was actually some fanfare about it.
But today the principal is out all day, and though I thought I would be luxuriating in a private, quiet place, I find myself at the school epi-center. There is constant activity outside the door; the 3rd & 4th grade class is on the other side of a very thin wall, and to the left of my laptop screen is a screen showing footage from 3 security cameras around the building. I know who’s at the door before they ring the bell for admittance. The only saving grace is that I do not get cell service in here, so at least I am not being disturbed by the ping of text messages.
It’s been a distracting year so far. I’m hoping I can learn some lesson during this day in the principal’s office.
